Job Title: FOKLSS Program Coordinator
Location: Kootenay Lake Region (Flexible, Hybrid)
Position Type: 25 hours per week to Dec 31 2026 with opportunity for renewal as funds allow
Compensation: $25-35/hour depending on previous experience
Reports To: President

Position Overview
The Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS) Program Coordinator will work closely with Board members, our active volunteer community, and junior staff to carry out FoKLSS’ mission and support future growth. Activities include beach cleanups and habitat restoration projects, public education and community outreach, monitoring initiatives, as well as administrative and capacity-building activities. This is a flexible, hybrid position, with a mix of remote work and hands-on, in-field coordination of community stewardship initiatives. Evening and weekend work will sometimes be required.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about freshwater ecosystems, community-led conservation, and creative public engagement. In addition, the coordinator will play a central role in FOKLSS from performing administrative tasks and grant writing, to fostering collaborative partnerships in communities. Working with staff and our active volunteer community, the Coordinator will instill stewardship values in local residents and organize numerous events, including flagship events like the Kootenay Lake Summit.
Key Responsibilities
Program Delivery & Community Engagement
- Oversee implementation of the annual work plan by staff and volunteers, including educational outreach and engagement, workshops and running booths at local markets and community events.
- Facilitate citizen science projects, such as iNaturalist blitz events for Raptor and Kokanee monitoring.
- Organize 5-10 shoreline cleanups during the calendar year, as well as collaborative events with other organizations.
- Coordinate volunteer stewardship efforts at Harrop Wetlands, in partnership with local volunteers, CKISS and other organizations.
- Promote community involvement using social media, posters, newsletter articles, and local media (e.g., radio interviews).
- Event planning and delivery for key events like the Kootenay Lake Summit.
Partnerships & Relationship Building
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with:
- Shoreline and local residents, and volunteers
- Environmental nonprofits and community organizations
- Local governments and stewardship committees
- Ktunaxa Nation, other Indigenous communities, and cultural organizations
Program Administration & Communications
- Maintain accurate and organized records of ecosystem monitoring and community science activities.
- Perform and support fundraising activities, including sponsorship outreach and donor engagement.
- Perform and support grant writing, budget tracking, and report writing for internal and external stakeholders
- Contribute to public relations and communications, including website content, newsletters, blogs, and media outreach.
- Engage and meet with Board and committees.
- Hire and supervise staff members, contractors and volunteers.
Qualifications
- Education or experience in environmental science, education, communications, community development, or a related field.
- Experience with community-based environmental programming, citizen science, or stewardship initiatives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with volunteers, Indigenous partners, and rural communities.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and social media engagement.
- Experience in event planning, grant writing, or fundraising is an asset.
- Familiarity with Kootenay Lake, regional ecosystems, or freshwater ecology is an advantage.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to transportation (fieldwork required).
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms.
Work Environment
- Hybrid position with flexible remote work and required in-field coordination across the Kootenay Lake region.
- Occasional evening and weekend work, especially during peak event seasons (e.g., October for the Kootenay Lake Summit).
