Excitement is in the air! Get ready to be part of something extraordinary at Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society‘s annual Kootenay Lake Summit!  This year the theme is “Stewardship in Action” and we will be highlighting hands-on stewardship efforts around Kootenay Lake.

Enjoy a delicious locally prepared dinner while hearing expert talks:

  • Robin Louie, who will talk about the extensive stewardship work of the Yakan Nukiy/Ktunaxa Nation;
  • Jakob Dulisse a local wildlife biologist with a particular interest in amphibians, reptiles, and birds; and
  • Andrea McKenzie a local volunteer stewarding Harrop’s Sunshine Bay Wetlands restoration project.

Enjoy live music by local artist Eva Tree and connect with other like minded people while learning more and supporting these important stewardship efforts. Weather depending, we may have some stories and songs around the outdoor campfire.

Robin Louie

Robin Louie is an ʔak̓aq̓ⱡahaⱡxu land steward, cultural practitioner and elected councillor from the community of yaqan nuʔkiy and one of the Ktunaxa Leaders. Traditional cultural practices from the mountain tops to the valley bottoms within the land of the two arches provide his personal connection and understanding for the land and water health. He addresses any problems using territorial cultural knowledge passed down over thousands of years through an unbroken family tradition as the people of the marsh.

Andrea McKenzie

Andrea McKenzie

Andrea is a first generation German Canadian who was born on Treaty 7 land and now resides on the junction of the north, south and west arms of Kootenay Lake. She is deeply grateful to the Yaqan Nukiy, who since time immemorial, have been the stewards of the beautiful place that she has called home for nearly 25 years. She would like to acknowledge the Secwepemc, Okanagan/Syilx and Sinixt Nations, the West Kootenay Metis and other diverse Indigenous People who also call these lands home. As a neurodiverse, cisgendered woman, mother, grandmother, wife, educator and volunteer, Andrea is mindful how all of her experiences, including those of intergenerational trauma, shape her world views. She  continues to work on understanding the plethora of biases and assumptions that influence her relationship with the all of her relations that live near or at the Harrop Wetlands.

Jakob Dulisse

Jakob Dulisse is a wildlife biologist located in Nelson, BC, with a particular interest in amphibians, reptiles, and birds; and has successfully led several projects involving these taxa throughout the East Kootenay region. Jakob has more than 25 years of experience conducting surveys for at-risk aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species, including mortality, and other impact assessments; inventories (breeding bird surveys, nest searches, call-playback surveys); habitat use, and identification of wildlife trees; and biological tissue sampling, handling, and salvaging (including securing required permits). He has also completed several habitat restoration projects for major infrastructure developments, including hydroelectric, major mines, and pipelines.
