With summer days in full swing, many of us are enjoying these long hot days at our favorite spots around Kootenay Lake. As more folks are staying close to home, the lake has come into focus as a destination for visitors and locals alike. Therefore, we here at Friends of Kootenay Lake are looking to reach out to more friends of the lake who want to join our network of members.

Help us reach our goal of signing up 50 new members in 50 days

Be entered to win prizes from Dig Garden Centre

GardenerWe will be giving away 8 prizes over the summer from Dig Garden Centre. We have 7 drought-tolerant and one water-efficient sprinkler that we will be giving away each week from July 20th, 2020 until September 8th, 2020

This year most of us have been very busy in the garden, and Dig Garden Center has been there for residents all throughout the Central Kootenays helping to build their beautiful gardens. Their team worked tirelessly at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak to make sure that folks could get all their veggie starts, soil, and perennials to grow a piece of paradise in an uncertain world. We are thrilled to be partnering with this locally grown business to offer beautiful drought-tolerant plants to our lucky new and renewing members!

Why become a member?

As a Friends of Kootenay Lake member, you will be joining a vast network of biologists, hydrologists, ecologists, historians, anglers, and other everyday folks who love Kootenay Lake. By becoming a member you will be kept in the loop with all of our projects and programs and have the knowledge that you are engaged in a collective effort to maintain the health and promote the stewardship of  Kootenay Lake.

The lake is the focal point of our community, it keeps us cool, centers us in hard times, and offers endless adventure. Love of the lake is at the center of what Friends of Kootenay Lake does. In 2012 Friends of Kootenay Lake was formed as a society whose vision was for Kootenay Lake to support abundant fish and wildlife, and be a long term sustainable source of freshwater for future generations.

With the support of the Kootenay Lake community and our many funders and sponsors, our team has made positive impacts on the lake environment. We have worked to restore shoreline ecosystems by creating wetlands and educating residents on how to protect their shoreline through beach clean-ups. We have created opportunities for environmental educations for all ages, providing free learning opportunities in schools and at community halls, as with our Kootenay Lake Summit. We field daily calls from residents and visitors who let us know what is happening around the lake, protecting this shared space from misuse and pollution. Learn more about our initiatives here.

All of this would not be possible without the support of our membership. Members contribute more than just membership fees, you help us create a network of passionate water stewards that care for the future of the lake and want to belong to a community of Friends of the lake. We are looking forward to growing this network and connecting with others who believe that concerned and active citizens can make a difference in protecting their aquatic and riparian ecosystems.
